Artist’s Statement

I am an artist because it is a part of me, like breathing, I do it to survive. People and things in nature
inspire me, but the painting goes beyond what is actually in front of me. Stories of my life, or my dreams or
poetry may come into play, and are often etched into the surface of the painting.  Stylistically, I enjoy
giving a glimpse of realism then searching through the energy and urgency of abstracted marks and
marry the two styles.

As a child growing up in southern Colorado, I spent hours outdoors drawing, playing or discovering images
in the clouds. Quiet times of observation became time of reflection and meditation. The images reflect
those feelings of serenity and for the importance of the subject.  For me, it is a way of recording that time
and place of where I am or perhaps something of nostalgia. Most of my work is interwoven with the
southwest.  I have a deep appreciation and respect for the people and land. To me the paintings represent
the ebb and flow of nature and life in southern Colorado. Water is not abundant, conditions can be hard,
and it is truly beautiful. There is a determination to thrive and flourish both from the people who live
there and the landscape that surrounds them. To express that juxtaposition between the severity and
tranquility of place, came effortlessly.

I work in all the watermedia, but find acrylic best brings out the paintings’ voice. The paint flows easily to
build luminous washes of color but can also give the energy marks and texture with drybrush.

Stephen Quiller, my mentor has been a strong influence in my work as well as  Katherine Chang-Liu,
Leslie Dill, Bo Bartlett and the poetry of Pablo Neruda.
